Information on EDF's nuclear fleet

As indicated in the EDF Group press release of 21 September 2016, EDF is progressing on controls in order to demonstrate that those steam generators of the nuclear fleet concerned by the issue of carbon segregation can operate in a fully safe mode.

18 reactors are involved:

  • 6 of them have already been granted approval to restart and are operating normally: Blayais 1, Chinon 1, Chinon 2, Dampierre 2, Dampierre 4, Saint-Laurent B1.
  • 7 of them are on planned outage and have been or are being inspected: Civaux 2, Dampierre 3, Gravelines 2, Tricastin 1, Tricastin 3, Saint-Laurent B2 and Bugey 4.
  • For the 5 reactors currently in operation (Tricastin 2 et 4, Fessenheim 1, Gravelines 4, et Civaux 1), Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire (ASN - Nuclear Safety Authority) in its Decision No. 2016-DC-0572 of 18 October 2016, requested EDF to conduct controls before 18 January 2017.

Consequently, in order to conduct these controls, EDF decided the following reactor outages:

  • Tricastin 4 from 22 October 2016 to 19 December 2016
  • Fessenheim 1 from 10 December 2016 to 03 January 2017
  • Gravelines 4 from 17 December 2016 to 10 January 2017
  • Civaux 1 from 23 December 2016 to 15 January 2017
  • Tricastin 2 from 23 December 2016 to 15 January 2017

Furthermore, EDF submitted to ASN on 7 October 2016 a technical report supporting the fully safe operation of all the steam generators concerned by the issue of carbon segregation.

The EDF Group today informed the electricity markets of the chosen outage periods and is providing regular information to Réseau de Transport d'Electricité (RTE), which has responsibility for balancing electrical power supply and demand and for ensuring the system's security of supply.

Considering these circumstances, their impact on the wholesale power market and the resulting speculative effects, EDF today called upon both the Minister of Economy and Finance and the Minister of the Environment, Energy and the Sea to take, in order to avoid these effects, all necessary measures under the regulated access to historical nuclear power (ARENH) mechanism, including, as the case may be, the temporary suspension of the scheme.

The 2016 nuclear output target is confirmed at 380-390 TWh as well as the 2017 nuclear output that should be in the range of 390-400 TWh, as per the Group press release dated 21 September 2016.

A key player in energy transition, the EDF Group is an integrated electricity company, active in all areas of the business: generation, transmission, distribution, energy supply and trading, energy services. A global leader in low-carbon energies, the Group has developed a diversified generation mix based on nuclear power, hydropower, new renewable energies and thermal energy. The Group is involved in supplying energy and services to approximately 37.6 million customers, of which 27.8 million in France. The Group generated consolidated sales of €75 billion in 2015, of which 47.2% outside of France. EDF is listed on the Paris Stock Exchange.
