Windows Server® 2008 R2 and Windows® 7 Benefit from AMD Virtualization™ Technology and Energy Efficiency

— Release of Windows Server® 2008 R2 and Windows® 7, When Powered by AMD, Deliver Advanced Performance and Reliability for Business–Critical Applications—

SUNNYVALE, Calif.—Nov. 17, 2009—AMD (NYSE: AMD) today congratulates Microsoft Corp. on the significant achievement of bringing the Windows® 7 and Windows Server® 2008 R2 operating systems to the enterprise. Windows 7 is the perfect companion for AMD Business Class technology[1] while Windows Server 2008 R2 and the Six-Core AMD Opteron™ processor together provide a stable and reliable, high-performance enterprise computing environment. The close collaboration between AMD and Microsoft helps enterprise computing customers achieve outstanding, stable performance in real-world applications.

· Next generation 12-core AMD Opteron™ processors (currently codenamed “Magny-Cours”) are expected to work seamlessly with Windows Server® 2008 R2 to deliver advanced virtualization performance, high VM density, simplified management, outstanding performance through virtual memory management, and low power consumption.

· AMD Virtualization™ (AMD-V™) technology combined with Windows Server® 2008 R2 Hyper-V helps customers to consolidate hardware resources, maintain compatibility with existing software, migrate running Virtual Machines between AMD Opteron processor-based servers and run previous versions of Windows.

· AMD-V™ gives employees outstanding flexibility with new Windows 7 features such as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Virtual PC Mode. With VDI, users are able to access desktops running on servers in the datacenter from any authorized, networked device, bringing new convenience to remote employees.[2] Virtual PC Mode helps Windows XP legacy applications to run on AMD processor-based Windows 7 systems that have AMD-V technology, helping maintain compatibility. 1,[3]

· AMD Business Class Technology offers specially engineered AMD platforms featuring stability and supporting essential manageability and security. This balance creates an ideal platform for the enhanced visual and productivity features of Windows 7 in multiple display configurations.[4]
