L'Armenia (armeno: Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն, "Hayastani Hanrapetouṭyoun") è uno Stato eurasiatico indipendente del Caucaso meridionale, con capitale Erevan.
L'Armenia confina con la Turchia ad ovest, la Georgia a nord, l'Azerbaigian e la repubblica "de facto" del Nagorno Karabakh ad est, l'Iran e l'exclave azera del Nakhchivan a sud. È quindi uno stato senza sbocco al mare.
Il nome originario del paese era "Hayq", divenuto più tardi "Hayastan", traducibile come "la terra ("stan" è un tipico suffisso persiano per indicare un territorio) di Haik". Secondo la leggenda, Haik era un discendente di "Noè" (essendo figlio di Togarmah, che era nato da Gomer, a sua volta nato dal figlio di Noè, Yafet) e, secondo la tradizione cristiana, antenato di tutti gli armeni. Haik si stabilì ai piedi del monte Ararat, partì poi per assistere alla costruzione della Torre di Babele e, ritornato, sconfisse il re assiro Nimrod presso il lago di Van, nell'attuale Turchia.
