Confina con il Pakistan a ovest, Cina, Nepal e Bhutan a nord-est, e Bangladesh e la Birmania ad est.
I suoi vicini prossimi separati dell'Oceano Indiano sono lo Sri Lanka a sud-est e le Maldive a sud-ovest.
