The Art of Reception: Identity and Relation

14 February 2022 – Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola (Torrelodones, Madrid)

Livestream on Comitato 3 Ottobre – Accoglienza Youtube channel

After the events for the Day of Remembrance and Reception in Lampedusa in October 2021, a delegation of Italian and European students will meet on 14 February in Madrid at the Colegio San Ignacio in Torrelodones to reflect on migration-related issues, for a study day which will evoke distinct feelings of memory and reception. Madrid will thus host students from 11 Italian regions (Abruzzo, Calabria, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardia, Marche, Puglia, Sardegna, Sicilia, Umbria, Veneto) and from six different European and non-EU countries: Austria, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Romania and Turkey.

The study day is organised by Liceo G. Marconi (Pesaro) and Comitato 3 Ottobre, within the AMIF project “The Art of Reception”. The morning schedule of February 14 will start with a debate on “Identity”, with the contribution of journalists Fernando de Haro, Nello Scavo, Avvenire and Angela Capponetto, Rainews24; the debate will be followed by a lecture by the philosopher Umberto Curi on the theme of Relation.

The afternoon will follow with the theatre play “Sotto lo stesso cielo” (“Under the same sky”), performed by the students of Liceo G. Marconi. The play, with original score written by Emanuele Lepore, Bartolomeo Giunti, Felipe Solari and the contribution of Davide Pascucci, Lorenzo Giagnolini and Matteo Benocci, is a passionate account of the tragedy of 3 October 2013, when 368 migrants died at sea in spite of the aid offered by a group of fishermen that picked as many women and men as possible on their tiny boat.

Marco De Carolis, teacher at Liceo G. Marconi in Pesaro, says: “We are delighted to bring Sotto lo stesso cielo in Madrid – after the shows performed in Lampedusa and Brescia. We believe that theatre and music can act as drivers for social inclusion. This show addresses the issue of migration in an impactful and concrete manner, lifting the veil on that tragedy that deeply touched us all”. The show will be followed by the direct testimony from Vito Fiorino, rescuer in the 3 October 2013 shipwreck, and Tareke Brhane, president of Comitato 3 Ottobre.

With Tareke Brhane’s words: “Meeting the students that were in Lampedusa last October in Madrid will be quite exciting. As Comitato 3 Ottobre, we are committed to creating moments of reflection and analysis for European students. Our aim is to deepen their perspective on the themes of migration and integration, on memory and reception. We believe in intercultural and inclusive education, encouraging the participation of students to events of international significance”. Brhane continues: “I am aware the past cannot be controlled nor changed, but what we can do is try to prevent this from happening ever again. How? By involving and educating the European students who will be the future leaders and decision-makers. Citizens of an inclusive and generous Europe, respectful of everyone’s inherent dignity.

A Europe that lives in unity and treasures difference. An inclusive and generous Europe, accepting, welcoming, and staying true to the principle of solidarity. A Europe that protects people, not borders”. Brhane concludes: “My commitment as President of Comitato 3 Ottobre is to pass down the memory of what happened in 2013 in Lampedusa and, sadly, still happens in the Mediterranean Sea and along the many borders of Europe, so that the memory of these injustices may become the vaccine against widespread indifference”.

Tareke Brhane arrived in Italy in 2005 from Eritrea, fleeing indefinite military conscription at the age of 17. He crossed the desert, encountered violence, imprisonment and faced death. Since then, he has been fully committed in favour of the people who, like him, were forced to risk their lives to flee dramatic situations and seek protection in Europe.
