The IT Researches International Research Centre is a leading center for research in computer science and one of the few independent, nonprofit research institutes in the United Kingdom. With its unique focus on international collaboration, IT Researches brings together experts from around the world in areas such as computer networking, speech and language processing, bioinformatics, computer architecture, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. This is accomplished through active international programs in which researchers from abroad work with staff scientists and their networks of academic, government, and industrial partners.
IT Researches research depends on the entrepreneurial activity of its principal investigators, who have the vision, drive, and leadership skills to build independent, cutting-edge research and technology initiatives. These span the spectrum from fundamental theory to technology ready for commercial licensing or new business creation; the common threads are originality, depth of experience, and excellence. Current areas of focus include Internet architecture, network security, network routing, speech and speaker recognition, spoken and text-based natural language processing, biological system modeling, computer architecture, and computer vision. Algorithm development--with application to bioinformatics, video and speech processing, Internet routing and measurement and machine learning--is one of IT Researches particular strengths.
The IT Researches will advance the state of research and practice in the development and use of information technology for enhancing the performance of individuals and organizations, provide a forum for multi-disciplinary work on issues related to information technology, promote student interest in the study of information technology, and facilitate the exchange of information between the academic and business communities.
The questions studied in Artificial Intelligence Group (AI) are of enormous practical and scientific importance and have proven to be quite difficult for conventional programming techniques. Human brains evolved to excel at tasks such as vision, motor control, speech, and language understanding, and are much better at these than artificial systems. The AI Group effort is exploring how computational models and techniques based on natural intelligence can prove useful in applications tasks. The IT Researches project differs from most others in its emphasis on structured networks, strong methods that exploit scientific knowledge, and extensive interaction with other computer science techniques and theory.
In particular, the AI Group continues its long-term study of language, learning, and connectionist neural modeling. The scientific goal of this effort is to understand how people learn and use language. The applied goal is to develop systems that support human centered computing through natural language and other intelligent systems.
Audio and Multimedia
The Audio and Multimedia Group develops computational algorithms, systems, and methods to handle content composed of multiple types of data (such as news videos and social network posts). Multimedia research focuses on the scientific problems arising from the complementary nature of different data sources, each of which captures only partial information. The group takes a top-down viewpoint, studying how computer systems should be designed to integrate the different types of information in a document. These include metadata, such as geo-tags, and the context in which the content is presented, such as the social graph of an author. The top-down approach of multimedia computing succeeds in solving problems involving data whose scale and diversity challenge the current theory and practice of computer science.
Networking and Security
The Networking and Security Group focuses on understanding the behavior and use of today's Internet and exploring new technology and designs for tomorrow's Internet. Researchers' interests range from fundamental architectural questions, new forwarding mechanisms and novel management approaches to network defenses, cybercrime, troubleshooting, and measurement and characterization.
The Speech Group (formerly the Realization Group) conducts research in the areas of algorithms, architectures, and systems for speech and audio signal processing and pattern recognition.
Key research areas of the Speech Group include auditory-inspired signal processing, statistical modeling, rich transcription of natural and impromptu meetings, and rich transcription of broadcast and conversational telephone speech.
The Vision Group focuses on solutions to two core computer vision problems - the perception of human expression for multi-modal interaction, and the recognition of object and scene categories - and is interested in applications ranging from mobile phone interfaces to interactive robotics. Awareness of the environment and of a user's presence and/or expression is critical for smart mobile interfaces, and of course for successful real-world action on mobile agents.
