The Memorial of Jesus’ death is the most important celebration observed by Jehovah’s Witnesses. It is based on the command given by Christ during the Last Supper when he said: “Keep doing this in remembrance of me”. Jesus instituted the Lord’s Evening Meal on Nisan 14, the month of the Jews calendar, after sundown, the same day in which he died, setting the pattern for future observances of the Memorial of his death.
This year it falls on Monday, April 14.
The celebration, lasting an hour, opens and closes with a prayer and a song. A qualified speaker will address a Bible based talk which explains the reasons why Jesus died for mankind and why it is still essential that we keep on remembering it. Near the close of that discussion, the speaker will indicate that the time has come to carry out what Jesus told his disciples to do: unleavened bread already broken into a few pieces and placed on serving plates and cups of red wine will be passed among the audience. These emblems symbolize Jesus’ body and blood which he offered at our behalf.
The entrance is free and no collections are taken.
In 2013, among the 3.050 communities in Italy, 460.990 people were in attendance, Witnesses and friends. Worldwide the Memorial attendance has been 19.241.252.
