Global Surfactants Market by Product type, Substrates, and Applications - Trends & Forecast to 2019

The global surfactants market is estimated to register a CAGR of 5.40%, by volume and 5.80% by value from 2014 to 2019. The global surfactants market is projected to reach 22,802 kilotons, by volume and $40,286 million by 2019. Due to the adsorption property that helps to stabilize the rapidly formed bubbles during foaming, emulsification or coating processes, surface reducing properties, flocculation, and biocide nature, surfactants are widely preferred chemicals in the specialty chemical industry. Also, as a result of elasticity and viscosity of the surfactant layer that gives stability to foam or emulsion, surfactants have gained popularity in different application segments. The global surfactants industry could roughly be divided into synthetic and bio-based surfactants, based on their substrates. This industry is expected to grow at a promising rate.

Also, currently, synthetic surfactants are more popular, and it is projected that their consumption will show a steady growth in the near future. However, the bio-based surfactants market, which is still in its early stages of development, is projected to grow at a higher rate than the growth rate of the synthetic surfactants. This growth could be articulated with facts, such as increasing awareness towards environmental factors, volatile petroleum prices, regulatory constraintsthat would get more stringent in future, and availability of wide variety of substrates required for the synthesis of bio-based surfactants.

Synthetic surfactants are traditionally produced from petroleum-based substrates and are widely used in different application segments, such as detergents and cleaners, auxiliaries for textiles, personal care, I&I cleaning, and paints & coatings. However, bio-based surfactants are synthesized from renewable substrates with green chemical processes and posses the same chemical properties as synthetic surfactants. Hence, there is increase in the consumption of bio-based surfactants due to facts, such as use of renewable raw materials, high cost of petroleum products, and environmental sustainability. Also, in addition to the above-mentioned segments, bio-based surfactants can also be consumed in other segments, such as cosmetics & pharmaceuticals, food industry, agriculture, petroleum industry, and environmental remediation.

The future consumption of bio-based surfactants would depend upon the R&D studies that would give better substrates and green chemical processes to synthesize and commercialize the bio-based surfactants, their price when compared to synthetic surfactants, and the commercially feasible processes to increase the yield from bio-based surfactants. The trend for bio-based surfactants for above-mentioned application segments is estimated to be the highest in the Asia-Pacific region due to increasing awareness of people towards biological products and increasing prices of petroleum products. Europe and North America are expected to show normal growth as they are mature markets for surfactants.
