Stories of Light

Roberto Piaia meets the Flemish and Dutch Masters of ‘600. Casa Museo G.B. Cima da Conegliano. 5th May to 10th June 2012
Conegliano, (informazione.it - comunicati stampa - arte e cultura) From Saturday, May 5th to Sunday, June 10th, the magnificent setting of the "Casa Museo GB Cima "offers the perfect setting for a unique exhibition, with an experimental flavour. The magic of light and detail and his meticulous approach bridge the years between contemporary artist Roberto Piaia and the major Flemish and Dutch masters of the seventeenth century found in the most prestigious museums in the world, the Louvre in Paris and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
'Stories of Light': Stories of Art.
As the light in the prism decomposes revealing the spectrum of colours to the eye, in this same way Art –in the search for aestheticism – breaks down reality to offer an infinity of interpretations, all current and recurring.
Through an exhibition of about thirty works, we are shown a rainbow of secret connections that link each of Roberto Piaia’s works with a corresponding old master from the gallery Caretto, building up, through reflections on the use of light, a meditative path among themes, techniques and subjects which show art as fluid and at times an indefinable entity like light, rather than something which has crystalised.

Hence the title of the exhibition, in which Piaia and Flemish and Dutch masters are associated with each other link after link.
The various works of the artists are full of minute details and show close attention to the world: the care given to the drapes, to crystal glasses, the portraits of scenes of everyday life, all lit by the light that closely surrounds both the infinitely small and the infinitely large, thus unifying all representations.
The Flemish and Dutch artists, storytellers of their times, portray the daily reality of the various social classes, from the masses to the upper classes of the "Golden Age" of the Netherlands.
Roberto Piaia "descibes" the nuances of our civilization and the influence of history in our time, with the woman as the protagonist.

A comparison, made possible thanks to paintings from the Galleria Luigi Caretto of Turin, one of the most important and ancient art galleries operating in Italy, an authentic institution in the field of Flemish and Dutch paintings. Since 1911, the year of its foundation, there have been four generations of Caretto’s each with a strong sense responsibility and a deep love for Art.
The Flemish and Dutch paintings on display are a collection of exempla of the many strands of art in the Netherlands.
Beginning with the subject-symbol: still life, represented by prominent authors such as Jan Jans De Heem and Cornelis Kruys. Herring, peeled citrus fruits, shellfish, a triumph of food as a display of opulence and allusions to worldly vanities, but also as an exaltation of the obvious qualities of matter through the painting technique.
For the occasion, these will be presented alongside a monumental work by Pieter Claesz, traditionally considered the most important Dutch still-life artist, which, in format and quality, is an "event" in itself within the exhibition.
The exhibition continues with the presence of other artists, from the nordic ‘Caravaggio’ Adam de Coster to a precious painting by Pieter Leermans, depicting a young woman with a guitar in her hand trying to touch a butterfly, all trapped in a niche, in the tradition of painters of the "gentle style" of the school of Leyden. This rich detail, (the red velvet cloth embroidered with gold thread, the book propped on the windowsill, so refined that you can read it), takes us back to the artistic quality and typical lenticular works Piaia.
Roberto Piaia, painter and sculptor from Pieve di Soligo (TV), born on 11/04/61, a consolidated artist, received, in 2009, from the Committee of the Critical Catalogue of Modern Art, (published by Knopf), the classification of AIC ( High Critical Interest )and this year he was selected by the Artistic Director to participate at the 54th Venice Biennale in the Italian Pavillion with a marble sculpture and a painting
Although it is an endless journey which continues in the search for eclecticism, a crossing over of horizons that requires creativity and assures the impossibility of repetition, Piaia remains in some way tied to the techniques of the Old Masters,by using oil as a technical support, he commits himself to a time-consuming process because it dries very slowly, but at the same time it allows the artist to apply numerous, soft, fragile and transparent layers of glazing that add a three dimensional visual effect.
As sound contains the tones of music, Piaia, through the "mind prism" in many of his works wraps or caresses the bodies and objects with the spectrum of light..
These fascinating esoteric symbols are the signature of quadricromatic Piaia: never the same, reminiscent of an indecipherable language, which which tells a story unknown to us, filling the images with mystery.
